MONASTERIES AND CHURCHES
As you sit by the beach or relax by the pool you let your eyes wander to the hills and mountains of Crete. Those with sharp eyes can make out small buildings in the most seemingly inaccessible places. These are churches that have been built there to commemorate a Greek Orthodox saint. There are hundreds of small churches and monasteries for you to explore from tiny one room hilltop churches to the sprawling, working monastery at Agia Triada on the Akrotiri peninsular.

THE LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE (Caretta Caretta)
Did you know that the Loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches of Crete each year? From the end of May to the beginning of August the adult females make their way up the beach to dig their nests. 7 - 10 weeks later the hatchlings start to emerge from the nest and make their journey to the sea. Only around 1 in 1000 baby Loggerhead turtles survive to maturity and come back to the same beach around 20 years later to lay eggs. It may be possible on your visit to join in with the turtle conservation efforts of the West Crete Turtle Society. Click on the picture to go to their website for details.
